Hi. I haven't bought a used car before but am intrigued by this deal.
I'm looking at buying a very low mileage 2005 SL500 (31K miles) for my 16 year old daughter. It is a two owner car and it's in great shape. However, the Carfax says that in 4/2008 it had 17000 miles on it; then in 6/2008 it had 55555 miles on it. No other mileages are reported in the history. Now the odomoeter reads 31K miles, which would be consistent with an error in the 55555 reported from the original dealer. To go from 17000 miles in 4/2008 to 55555 miles in 6/08 seems very unlikely, and if you discount the 55555 and look at miles from 4/08 to now (7/10) the odometer looks reasonable.
Does anyone know how to resolve this?
Also the car has been smoked in. Does anyone know how to get smoke smells out a car? There is no evidence of a tobacco burns in the dash, ashtray, upholstery or carpet.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
I think such car got 2 memory locations for storing odometer reading.
2 owners in 5 years. The first ownership could be a lease, car was returned then sold to 2nd owner. "Someone" might have tried to roll back odometer at one memory location but did not know or forgot about the second memory location. If you buy it, you're the 3rd.
SL is an expensive car but 55K miles/5 years appears more reasonable than 31K miles/5 years. The smell of smoke tells you the previous owner didn't care about keeping the car "clean".
