I see your problem clearly - very nasty, and it cannot be right ...

As you can see in post #4 above, I did advise JERSEYHAWG about some potentiometers on the mirror motors that the WIS referred to. We had no further posts so I do not know the result of his investigation of the same problem.

Why not pm him?

There will be no 'limit switch'. In general for items like, eg, electric windows, electric sunroof, power steering, the motor stop position is detemined by the revolutions of a Hall sensor on the motor shaft being counted and saved in a module memory. These values can be reset and corrected. In the case of windows, etc, the procedure is well-known. In the case of your (and my) folding mirrors, I don't know the answer. Hopefully someone else does..

Easiest way to work this problem is to stop by the dealer, get an estimate for the fix then you know if it can be DIY fix or not. Dealers don't charge money for estimate.

I agree ^^^^

Have as word with a MB service advisor about this first. There may be a software fix for this, so there is no point in tearing your door apart for nothing. The drawings already on this thread show you how to remove the mirror cover and the mirror glass, which should expose all the motors.

The WIS does not specifically address removing any of the motors inside the mirror. There are instructions for removing the complete mirror, and that involves first removing the front door interior covers.

I'd say get some more information from MB before you start a DIY...
