Benz - Newbie!

Hi! I recently purchased a 1997 E420 with 150K on it. It was in what looked to be pretty decent shape and I got it for a great price - $2000. I probably should have researched it more before buying it. I didnt know about some of the more common issues these cars have! I found the rusty spring perches and replaced both. While in there I found a cracked lower control arm so I replaced both and while at it I figured I'd go ahead and replace the struts. Its a good thing I was able to find reasonable parts and have a friend that is a mechanic! So far I in for about $450 in parts and repairs onthe front end.

Now I have discovered heating and ac issues. I'm hoping that the control unit works adequetly to get by but the fan is running at 50%. Found that the condenser is leaking andhave on on order - should not be big deal! I also ordered a "modified" regulator that I read about in this forum so hopefully that will take care of the fan. I found the probably root cause in the cabin filters being clogged with cat hair!

All in all I'm not terribly unhappy although I amglad that I am pretty resourceful and not paying dealer prices!

Last weekend I started treating the start of some rust cancer with POR15 - looks good so far.

Overall the car drives great and after doing what looks like neglected maintenance I belive she will be fine!

By the way one my other cars is 2007 Chrysler Crossfire - MB! I love it as well!

Any helping tips or advise from the more experienced E420 forum members would be appreciated.

I too recently bought a Mercedes ML320 1998 hopping to drive a few miles because of the reliability of the Mercedes. I have since replaced the brake pads, the Center bearing, and the window switches. Thanks the members in this forum I have been able to find enough repair information to fix those. Yesterday my transmission stuck in low gear so I am searching the postings for information on the transmission problem.

I think you will like it here there are lot of supporting member who are so willing to help.

Welcome to the forum.
