'96 220C A/C Compressor needs replacing. Advice Please!

I bought my '96 220C new and it only has 61k miles on it. Had it stored 3 years while in Europe too. Got it recharged just in case when I serviced it before putting it back in service and all was good for the first 10 thousand miles. (Only had 28K on it at the time). Then the A/C started making a clacking noise so I quit using it as I really didn't need it. Now I do.

The guy at the shop said the compressor is shot and I need a new one and quoted me $1250 to do the work. Said he wouldn't do rebuilt and that the only way they will guarantee the new one is if I also replace the dryer at the same time.

Well, I can't afford that so I am looking into replacing it with a used one. Here are my questions.
1. I want as new a "used" one as possible and notice that the 2004-5 Chrysler Crossfire also uses the same part number. (60-00846). Anyone know other later model cars with the same model compressor that I could look for to get the best one for the job?

2. How important is it that I also replace the dryer. I don't know what it does or if it's a wearing part so I have no way to make an informed decision.

3. I notice some of the used descriptions include references to automatic transmissions etc. Does this matter when choosing a recycled compressor?

Thanks for answers and any tips that I might not know to ask about.

The receiver drier has to be replaced anytime the AC system is exposed to air, but that is the least of the cost.

$1250 seems steep for a compressor replacement, they sell on eBay for about $100.

the $1250 was for the new compressor, a new dryer, evac and recharge and labor. That was the grand total but I agree.. it seems a little steep.. even for all new parts. I can buy a used compressor for around $100 like you said but to get the best one, I am trying to figure out how to identify it as a part rather than by a 14 year old car. I know this specific compressor is used in a lot of Mercedes models as well as more than a few other cars of varying years as well. That is what my question #1 addresses.

Thanks for the answer to question #2. I suppose new is the only way to go there.

Still need to know about the interchangeability with other car models.. anyone got info on that?
