Found Cheap '93 Benz 300SE With Issues

So I found a '93 300SE, It's got 140,000 miles on it. Only $1999 (they reduced it down from $3500 which was list a few months ago)

Here are the problems:

The battery is dead, they say if I go buy one for it then the car should be fine. While test driving it (there was a battery charger thing hooked up to it), the speedometer doesn't work. I'm also worried that it's the alternator and not the battery's fault. Wouldn't they just buy a battery for the car to avoid it looking bad??

Should I just drive up to autozone and have them do some diagnostic work on it?

That should already tell you that there is something wrong with the car, or it has just been wrongly priced to begin with. So, either be prepared to spend money on it or keep looking.

Dealer doesn't want to spend any money on a car that has sat on the lot for months. They just want to get rid of it. Hence, if you are still interested, make a ridiculous offer and see if they'll take it.

I don't think AZ will be able to help you much. Just take it to an actual shop to do a PPI.

Its a parts car. At that price, it doesn't make much sense to start throwing loads of money into it to make it work correctly. You have only found the obvious things, just imagine what a PPI would find! yikes!!!

Second that.

There's simply no such thing as a bargain Mercedes.

1993 Mercedes and "issues" go hand in hand.

The only thing that lasts longer on a Mercedes than on any other car is the prestige.

There's nothing more expensive than a cheap Mercedes-Benz.

Don't mean to hijack a thread, but I'm about 75% sure my next car is going to be a big 'ole diesel Mercedes (something in the neighborhood of a 1987 300d). I know even if the car is listed as "good condition/everything works" there will likely be issues, but what are the biggest problems with old Mercedes that would make them undrivable?
