Two most common causes of this are the Crankshaft position sensor, which has been replaced to no avail and the fuel pump. The fuel pump will not put the CEL on and will not give fault codes.

I heard the computer will kill the engine when it gets too hot as a self-protection.
Than fuel pump on MLs don't have good reliability records.
The famous electrical connections that burn inside the gas tank.
Pump failure is easy to troubleshoot by pushing the valve on top of fuel rail.

I traded my 1998 ML in after having the same issue that could not be corrected. I didn t trust it after that.

Did you ever diagnose your hot starting problem? I also have it. Same symptoms as you have. When car is hot after driving, or even after it just sits in the sun, when I turn the key the instrument panel lights up but there is no sound from under the hood. I hear the fuel pump though (in the back).

When the car cools down it starts normally.
