Newbie w/ ML350 ? - low speed/high RPM

Hi all... newbie here. I own a 2006 ML350. From a cold start, my RPM was in the range of 3000-4000 while slowly accelerating to 30 mph. It then settles back to about 2000 RPM. At two red lights, the RPMs raced again when accelerating. I pulled over and restarted the engine and the problem went away. Does anyone have any suggestion as to the cause? Thanks in advance.
