How much is this 1984 300D worth?

My father passed away in December of 2008 and left me with a lot to do, God rest his soul. He was a Mercedes trained old-school certified mechanic. He was in the process of changing the head gasket in his 1984 300D with around 223,000 miles when he got too sick to work and left it undone. Only a few engine parts were taken out (now in a box in the trunk) and he never even got a chance to take out the head. The mechanics around here want around $1,000 to change the head gasket. It might need a new oil pan gasket too because It leaks a little oil. I want to sell it but don't know what a fair price is. Should I have all the parts put back in so at least it runs?

Looks like a pretty nice car. As a non-runner good body donors can bring a grand. If you decieded to fix everything and get her going, she might be worth 3-4 depending on what kind of work has been done and if all the secondary systems are working properly. If there's any rust on the car, I would suggest offering it for $500 and let someone else deal with it. For the investment, it wouldn't really be worth fixing.

Put the parts back in it to make it be in running condition and sell it as-is. Let someone else do the head gasket job. The car is going to be worth a lot more if someone can at least start and drive it, rather then just look at it.

What was wrong with the head gasket in the first place?
I agree with Mr.X
Value of the car can be pretty tricky. I've seen W123 wagon in pristine condition going for around 10 grands, but sedans even in showroom condition need somebody loving the car to pay any significant money.
If you are on the market for a daily driver, would you even consider a car with no ABS and no airbags?

It does appear to be in pretty good shape. Depending on the rest of the mechanicals, and the amount of rust it has, it could definitely be worth fixing. My car is pretty darn similar and for what I paid for mine, it would make sense if you had this car fixed...

Sorry to hear you lost your father; mine has been gone since 1995 at the tender age of 71. I'd say your father took very good care of that car and to me, it would be worth fixing and keeping as a treasured memento.

Just to explain: when my father died in 1995 he left behind a 1991 Toyota Camry with 12,000 miles. I took the car over but my mother held the title, paid for most maintenance and insurance. I drove it alternately with my Plymouth "work car" until she died in 2002. I then bought it from the estate and still drive and maintain it regularly. It currently has 123,000 miles on it.

Long story short and from the looks of that car, your father loved it and that was part of him. I would do the necessary repairs and think of him fondly whenever I was driving or polishing it. That's the way I deal with the Toyota but your decision and sentiments might well differ from mine.

Unfortunately I can't drive because I have Muscular Dystrophy and use a ventilator to help me breathe. I learned everything from my dad about fixing cars and could fix this car myself if I wasn't so severely disabled. It would be hard getting my nurse to fix the car, even with my directions . I am getting a van with a lift so I can't really keep 2 cars.. I know a guy who can put the parts back in cheaply. Would $2,500 be a fair price if it's drive-able and leaking a little oil and one rear power window doesn't work?

Sorry to learn about your MD too. The best place on BW to ask your questions is on the dedicated forum. I think your father's car is a W123 so why don't you ask those actual owners? You can find that forum under the sedans section.
