1989 560 SEL drivers door lock does not work

Hi

My 1989 560 SEL (4-door sedan) has an issue with the drivers door lock...

The drivers door is always unlocked and will not lock. The little knob is missing, so you cannot manually lock it or unlock. If you use the key and turn it either direction, the door still stays unlocked. If you use the key in either the passenger door or the trunk, all the other doors (and trunk and gas door) will lock and unlock, but the drivers door still stays unlocked.

Can anybody give me any suggestions on what I should look for and how to troubleshoot the problem?

Thanks

Just a quick stab in the dark. Do your locks work on a vacuum/pressure system (called PSE) with a pump and lines to the locks, vents flaps, etc? If so look for a leak in that door's tubing or trace the line from the pump. It's also possible the lock mechaism in binding. If all else fails, try posting this on the W126 forum (Sedans section) to get the attention of the other owners. Good luck and welcome to BW.

I think they do run on some kind of air pump ... I am not very mechanicly inclined, so I could take the door panel but then I would just stare blankly and wonder what to do. At least now I have a possible idea what to look for!

I will post in the other forum as well.

Thank you!

"not very mechanicly inclined" sounds like me too. I know my 2001 locks work like that, but quite unsure about a 1989 S-Class. The guys on the W126 forum can tell you exactly where the lines are and what color. You're very welcome!

The door locks are electrically initiated & pneumatically operated. A functional diagram of the system in your W126 560 SEL is shown below. The supply pump and most of the pneumatic pipe must be OK if all the other doors & the trunk lock work. You need to replace the missing knob.

Regarding your problem, the chances are:

a) there is a leak in the pneumatic pipe that operates the door lock S47.
b) the control & working element S47 itself is faulty and should be replaced.

I can post a drawing of the element if it helps.

SOLVED

Ok, so the issue was the missing knob! I had to take the door panel off however to find the metal thing that the knob screws onto (which was stuck/binding), but once I put the knob back on it works great now!

And it only took me 40 minutes from start to finish!

Thanks for everybody's help!
