New Member with 2 SL's and one SEC
I am a crazy person as I have two SL's a 1982 380sl and a 1988 560sl. Both navy blue or midnight blue. I also have a 1987 560sec. Black with Black. I have each of these cars for many years and got them with 30k miles. They all still have low miles. I changed the stereo in each one. Today I noticed the gear shift light was not working on the 560sl and I ran to my mechanic and he fixed the problem by rewiring rather than pulling the radio and going to the origin of this wire. Can anyone tell me about the origin of this wire? The wire somehow got cut when the new radio was installed or perhaps just got crushed. I know my model had a radio recall when new. When the wire was tested today it did not work so I believe Derrick rewired with another local wire. The lights on the climate control system work.
Also who can tell me if 22 works well on the climate control unit. It works for a while but then the heat goes on. This happens after about ten minutes on the auto cycle of the 560sl. Once I turn the dial to the blue it gets cool again. I replaced the temperature control unit on my 380sl as I was only getting hot and cold. On the 560 I replaced the buttons but not the control unit as I can regulate the temperature. 22 works well on my sec. I have to charge the ac every two years. On the 380 the charge lasts maybe a year so I don't bother using the ac in that car.
I find the seats in mb text much more comfortable in the 380sl than the 560sl. I want to find the best way to get the power out of the 380 as it is slower and does not downshift a lot. Does the 1982 380sl have 3 gears or 4? I converted the timing chain. When does the click on the gas petal when floored kick in? Have you ever gotten this car to rev past 3 rpms? How bad is it to put the 380 into drive from reverse when you dont come to a complete stop?
