New Member with a 300SD
Hey all. New to the forum. Not new to Benz Diesels. I live in the northern suburbs of Detroit.
My latest is a 1982 300SD. It's my 7th. Bought it in Warren, MI. It had been in a garage since 94. 137K. Bought it from a guy who bought it and got it running.
First fill up, I punched the trip reset and killed the odometer. Took it apart and found I'd shattered the drive gear. Saw that I could buy new gears for $25 each (what?!?) I made a trip to a local hobby shop (train repair specialists) and found the drive gear a part of a motor kit. Motor and 3 gears was $3. So that's fixed. The other gears... we'll see. ( I found a source for those, as well..)
All rubber lines have been replaced or in the process of replacement. Just did the last one at the fuel tank that was seeping. Car has a RAM water separator under the hood with led indicator under the dash. Unfortunately, I can't seem to source the filters for it, so will probably switch back to the stock in-line filter.
Changed out the head unit from my 1990 300D. It's an Alpine. Will be adding an iPod box, as well. (Oil pump failed on that while going down the freeway at 238,000.) Wish I could have got a recording of my German mechanic when he called me and told me it was "kaput". (It's in great shape, body-wise, but I can't justify the cost of a used 602.) Decided to go back to the cast iron tanks.
Changed the oil to Mobil 1.
Scrubbed down the interior. Good condition, but was dirty from sitting 16 years. Driver seat has some broken springs.. need to repair it.
Front end had some damage. One of the Euro lights was broken. Hood was damaged slightly, not sure if I will replace it or repair it.
Has the original bunt-cake rims. The guy I bought it from had bought used tires, so I have 4 different tires on it. The spare is dry-rotted. Not sure if I will buy tires for those rims or replace with the tires I had just bought for my 1990. They are the recommended tires for 16 wheels that fit the 1982. and dimensionally (perimeter) is identical to the stock tires.
Air needs servicing.. Hoping it just needs a charge, but sitting for all those years has mbe concerned.
Currently struggling with the ignition switch housing. It's failed and I need to get that fixed. As long as the plunger doesn't engage, the tumbler works fine. The steering lock mechanism, however, is hosed.
So the saga continues.
By the way, I'm a songwriter, and commute regularly to Nashville. My goal is to get the car road-worthy for the task. No cheaper (plusher) way to get to Nashville than in a big Benz diesel. Nice head unit and ipod makes it even better.. (gotta have that air working, as well.)
Anyways, good to be here.
