hesitation problem

hey guys!!
I'm new to this forum and i apologize if i haven't setup a profile yet. I'm just really anxious to see if i can get some helpful responses on this.

I've done tons of searching on the internet but no real answer.

I have a 1992 400e, the car drives absolutely GREAT! I purchased the car about 4 months ago, and it has a little over 123000 miles on it. The first things that i did upon purchasing the vehicle were: new air filters, plugs, plug wires, distributor caps, and a Mass air sensor.

I only run 93 octane in the vehicle. I also did a dose of seafoam into the intake to help clean up any deposits. (the vehicle did sit about 4-5 months before i purchased it.) By the way, the seafoam really helped a lot.

The reason for this topic is... Ever since i purchased the car, I have had hesitation issues upon acceleration. When i say acceleration... i mean if i were to pass/go around another vehicle, it feels as if the fuel is being cut or i have a bad injector. The car runs awesome under simple everyday driving. If i floor it, it's even worse. Once the car is at a stop sign, it shakes really badly. When i goto pull away from the stop sign, I have to barely press the pedal to go or it will choke down. (but will not stall) If i've passed someone on the highway and run into this problem, i've realized that i can put the car into neutral and turn the car off and restart. It solves the problem, until i accelerate hard again.

I don't have any check engine lights on or ASR lights on. The ASR seems to be doing it's job correctly. I do have an oil pressure light on though. (bad sending unit)

I have been told about the overload protection sensor on the transmission. I don't think that is the problem because the article i read said that the car wouldn't shift past 4000rpm. Mine actually shifts fine. Although i do feel like the timing is being retarded in some way. The only thing i can think the problem could be is the throttle position sensor.

Please, someone show me that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Thanks

1. Why was the MAF sensor replaced?

2. Has fuel pressure been checked?

hello and thank you for the reply.

I've only owned the car for about 4 months. I've had the problem since the first day I've owned it. Pretty much after I did the plugs and wires, along with the air filters and dist. caps... The car ran a lot better but the hesitation was still there. I have a pull-a-part not far from where i live, so i figured why not try and find a MAF for cheap.
So...I changed out the MAF and, no difference.

As for the fuel pressure, I haven't checked that yet. I have noticed recently that I'm getting a sulfer smell from the exhaust. I also have always gotten rich fuel smell as well. I don't know if maybe my cats are bad and that's why the car is doing this, or what. I don't have any other problems with the car other than the hesitation at acceleration, you know... for instance, a generous press of the pedal to quickly move around another vehicle. I've gone on 200 mile road trips, driving it easy and no problems. Like I said it's only when i wanna get on it a little.

It's really got me stumped because I don't know where to look next without really spending a decent amount of money.

If you could try and help lead me in the possible direction of the solution, that would be great. I really appreciate it.

O2 sensor might be suspect, but then you should be getting a "Check engine" light. Checking the cats shouldn't be expensive, Midas can do that for you.

yep, no check engine light. Going to midas sounds like a good idea. I may try and go tues or wed. Hopefully a trip there can result in some good news.

I still feel like I should check the fuel pressure too. I forgot to mention that in the mornings when i start the car, if i don't wait long enough and put it in Reverse or Drive too fast it sometimes wants to stall. I figured that may be a fuel delivery issue. Then again clogged cats could also be a reason.

Thanks, i'll let you know as soon as I it looked at.
