INVALID VIN #???? no record per DLR

Hi guys,
My brother in law has a 2002 S430 and he lost the key. He went to the dealer and brought the title. The parts guy told him theres no record of that vin#!!
He said check the car against the title and he did it does match. I can't access that russian vin site from work (it is blocked) so anything els he can do? He bought it used from a private party. I remember it even had stickers inside the door saying it was a certified pre owned car a few years ago. I thought, could it be a stolen vin#? any help for him would be appreciated. Thanks!
Mustafa

Russian site says invalid. Are you 100% sure you are reading the entire VIN?

That is a valid VIN format for a W220, and the production number is low enough to be an '02 MY VIN. It wouldn't matter if it was gray market or not; all recent VINs conform to a global format, so US VIN numbers are not distinguishable (that's what I've been told, not what I know to be true).

All I can figure is the two digits after the 'G' and the two digits after the 'J' may be wrong. Carefully check the 70 and 62 for correctness. It's the numbers not the letters that are invalid, I think.

Good luck.

update for my brother in law

Ok, My Brother in law checked and that is the vin # on the car and on the title. I checked with another mercedes dlr and they said this vin # is not valid. I went to carfax and it shows 2002 s430, and 7 records, but I want to ask my brother in law to pay for it b/c its $34 to check just one car now. what happened to the $20 for a month unlimited records? I guess everything is more expensive now. Is there anywhere else that the vin could be "hidden" to see if it was ever changed? like inside a quater panell or under a seat or any other place?
thanks

recently i had a car like this in the dealer, was an 02 c230 and the vin on the vehicle was an invalid vin and wasnt valid with mbusa. anyway when i hooked the das up to the car the short test revealed the true vin of the vehicle. and that vin was valid. so i suggest taking the car to the dealer and have them do a short test to see if the same vin comes up which i doubt it will. the short test will read the vin from the eis.

If you mean "world wide" by "global", then the claim you have been told is not true. Most of the world is not following the US VIN format but the MB internal VIN format (that exists for all US MBs too).

This is the one that includes the chassis type "not ciphered" like my "WDD2211221A+serial".

You could have a look at the VIN stamped on the body (see user manual for the locations), check the carfax engine number matches the car etc. If the VIN is not original for the car, you should see the old one being destroyed and a new one stamped in place.

I believe a W220 would have the VIN stamped in front of the rear seat, passenger side:

Better to read the VIN with Star too.

Could this be a totalled car that was recovered abroad and brought back? Something like this has happened in Europe for cars originating the western part and visiting east (I don't know if MB erases the VIN from their database in a case like this).

By the way, this VIN is not known by on-line MB servers (European, but those cover VINs world wide).
