Greetings from Florida!

I've got a 1985 190e 2.3 automatic that has given to me by my cousin, who bought it for a pittance as a project car and then promptly left it parked under a grapefruit tree at my grandmother's house for the better part of a year. Before that, it sat on the side of the road with a sign in the window, for what was proably another year.

Here's the car when I got it. It looked much better in photographs than it does in person:

And here is what it looks like now (still kinda looks better in pics and in person):

So far, my "free" 190e has cost me a cool $5000 in parts and outsourced work to get up to daily driver condition. I know, I could have bought one in much nicer shape from the onset, but where's the fun in that??? At least this way I'll know what I have from the ground up. (That's what I keep telling myself, anyway!)

Despite the paint, parts and other things that I've done to it, there is still a substantial list of issues that I would like to sort out. The most immediate issues I'll be researching here:

1) Tach doesn't work. Problem is not the tach. Is there a flywheel sensor or does this read from the coil? What is the most likely fault and how tough is the fix??

2) The odomoter is stuck at 90K (while that doesn't look bad, I like the odo to work so I can keep good track of gas mileage). I have had the speedo out (when I changed the tach) and saw that the main gear was loose. I put everything back in place and made it work, but it popped lose after working for about 200 miles. Not sure if I should replace or try to fix again...?

3) Central door lock vacuum system makes noise, but doesn't open the doors or trunk. I'm guessing I have obvious vacuum leaks. However, I've no idea how this system works or how to troubleshoot it to fix.

4) Auto transmission shifts, but the shift points seem way too low. I don't have a frame of reference there, but it sees the car is more of a dog than it should be. Plus, I guess my gas mileage is taking a serious hit here, too. I'm shifting it myself 80% of the time to keep in good torque range. Mileage has actually improved (I think).

There are other minor issues, but those are the four that immediately come to mind...

I grew up in Germany and was living there when these first came out. I've always liked the baby Benz. But, had to have the European headlights because the US sealed-beam versions look silly. Not sure what my long term plans are for the car, but for now this will be a short-distance daily driver to be a second car to the family SUV.

Anyway, I'll be posting on my issues, and hopefully contribute some value when I share some of my experiences along the way.

Looking forward to making somemore online friends and contacts.
