1991 MB 300SL

I just found a nice clean 91 SL that I picked up for what I thought was a good price. Low and behold I get it home and remove the hard top and, well you know the rest. The old oil leaking from the sun visor, any way it appears that some if not all of the hydraulic pumps are leaking and my local dealer wants 12k to replace them. One of the mechanics suggested that I try one of the forums and see if anyone has access to a set of seals so that I can rebuild the pumps myself. I also need to order a service manual for the 129 series car. Any help that I can get would be appreciated. Thanks.

There's a section dedicated to the r129:

R129 SL Class - Benzworld.org - Mercedes-Benz Discussion Forum

Check the stickies, softop issues are covered exhaustively. You won't have to spend 12k on your cylinders...

This probably sounds way too obvious, but why not just throw the hard top back on there and drive the silly thing as a coupe, especially if it's otherwise nice?

Go to the 129 forum and look at the stickies. There is a wonderful guy who rebuilds the cylinders for $70 or so each and turnaround is a week or less. You can get all 14 cylinders rebuilt for right at a grand. You should be able to get the 4 you mention rebuilt for $300 or so.

Top cylinders are a known weakness of the R129. Truth is they aren't all that finicky, but you can look at doing them every 100k or so.

Seals to rebuild yourself are widely available after market. Some people take the cylinders to Lowe's or somewhere and find seals in the plumbing section that seem to work. Don't know that for a fact, but it's what I heard.

Of you register your car with MBUSA, you may find that your owner's manual is available as a .pdf download off their web site. Even if it isn't, registering with MBUSA is a good idea. Just go to http://mbusa.com and follow the registration process. It's free.

Good luck.
