300SDL turbo won't spool up
Today we bought an '87 300SDL. The odometer broke at 250K miles. According to the previous owner, it broke after they bought the car and they drove the car that way for several years. However, he indicated that they did not put any major miles on the car.
Therefore, my best estimate is that the car has about 300K miles on it. It is definitely not pristine but the vacuum system works and that alone is a blessing. I have limited maintenance records through about 220K miles but very little from that time until we acquired it.
The engine starts easily and sounds ok. But it's pretty sluggish to get up to speed and we don't think the turbo is spooling up. My son disconnected the hose and determined that the turbo spins freely so we don't think it's frozen.
If anybody can point us to a previous thread or suggest a do it yourself way to approach analyzing the problem we will be in your debt.
I have read about the "trap oxidizer" problem. However, I have not been able to figure out whether this car has one or if the recall work has been done to the car. If somebody could explain how I can determine if this has been done that would also be helpful. If it hasn't been done we hope to take the car to a dealership and have it done. It is my understanding that they will still do this work.
My son is wondering if the waste gate is clogged and that's why the turbo won't cycle. However, we're just rankly guessing at this point. We would love to nurse another 50K miles out of the car. If we do, we will consider that we got our money's worth.
Thanks to all.
