Question 2005 SL 65 AMG maintenance-free battery?

Dumb question, but.......Does anyone know if battery, that is in the engine bay of SL65, that is dedicated to starting the V-12 motor, is maintenance free?

The battery has 6 filler caps which would indicate to me that distilled water should be added to top up each cell, when they are lower than fill point of each cell?

I was advised this battery was maintenance free by two dealers despite the battery style with the access caps? Not confident in their answers....

Battery in trunk for accessories is sealed off with an adhesive material, so I assume this is maintenance free, i.e. no adding of distilled water, etc...

Any info or experience would be helpful.....car has 33k miles and battery is about 6 years old....

Not dumb at all in my opinion. If there are removable filler caps you should keep a close eye on the fluid level. That is not a maintenance free battery.

The battery should read AGM or VRLA if it is an MB maintenance free battery. This one actually has caps but those are not supposed to be opened, the battery looses its performance even if one just opens the caps and puts back. But these caps are "sealed" and do not even look like the traditional battery cap that can be and is supposed to be opened.

I can confirm what DB says. Our original ML320 is 11 years and 8 months in our possession and the battery with caps was never, ever opened, never charged and out of truck only once when I repainted the tray.
Still works.

No I don't think you did. I'm sure some MB models have had batteries that need maintenance and then the owner should follow your advice. A 2005 likely would but you only gave the advice on the condition it has removable caps. Never know if even a 2005 car has an original battery.

A note: the maintenance free battery is called AGM/VRLA battery, not related to AMG models.

A nice car for sure.

Musikmann is correct. The battery under the hood is NOT maintenance free. See attachment.

Great Info...

Thanks for the conclusive proof with the PDF......

Dealer told me it was maintenance free upon inspection.....which I suspected was not correct.......appreciate the info and file........

Funny thing is that Visit workshop - battery warning went off after installation of new battery, but check engine light came on......always something to occupy the mind......
