Purchasing car in GA, titling in VA.. questions

I'm getting ready to fly down this weekend and purchase a car in Georgia which will ultimately be registered in Virginia. The dealer charges a dealer fee, gives me 30 day tags and tells me that I then register it in Virginia (including taxes and tags).

1 of the 3 banks I spoke to claims that I will be required by law to register and title the car in GA, and then I'll have to retitled it in Virginia, essentially paying sales tax in both states. I've spoken extensively with the dealer, and they claim no such thing. The dealer has a A+ on BBB, and seems pretty legit. The one bank claims they can't give me a loan unless I title and register the car in both states, they claim the title won't be "clean".

Anyone have any insight into this process?

Your state should have temp tags for this purpose. Go to your SoS or DMV site and check it out. You insurance guy can help too.

I've bought 4 Benzes out of state and never had an issue.

Thanks!

Worry more about being insured than registered. Tell your agent what you're doing.

You could probably drive the car home with no plate at all as long as you had bill of sale in the car.

I think that bank employee is misinformed and I agree with the other posters. Call your DMV and inform your agent.

Thanks for the heads up, I've looked at the DMV requirements and spoken to the dealer, and I don't think it'll be a problem.

get yourself a trip pass for VA...it's a few $$ and you can print it out online.

Where in GA are you picking ?? up?

Personally, I'd take the inland route since 95/85 Sucks, but that's just me..

I have bought several vehicles out of state as well. I had to buy a transit plate for $25 in NC once but never had an issue with the bank. As suggested, speak to your insurance company. They will write you a policy and take the paperwork with you.

What did you buy??????

Since I bought several vehicles from private owners -on quite few occasions I drove the car with no license at all. Few of those times were over 2000 miles. Only once I got pulled over and the officer was satisfy with bill of sale.
State taxes are transferable. I think it applies to all states, that if you pay sale taxes at the state of purchase, than registering in another state you pay just the difference. The dealers where I bought couple of cars didn't want to mess with it and let me go without paying any taxes, so I paid all sale tax in California.

Some states have sales tax reciprocity agreements with other states. There is one big consortium formed in recent years likely in response to internet and eBay Motors transaction volume. Typically if the state in which you buy has a higher rate than your home state you don't get a refund when you get back home, for example Oregon residents get taxed at the California rate rather than zero. Which means the whole thing is a ponzi scheme to tax you at the highest rate - a fairly common interstate state tax scheme. I've never thought these things would stand up to a court challenge but I don't think the case has ever been brought.

Now I see the good point of having highest California taxes in the country.
I don't have the above problem.
