Soft Top Stuffed!

Hey Guys,

I own a 1994 SL 2.8 liter Merc. Cars great, runs fine and up until now havent had any problems with it. I've read everything I could find on, soft tops and hard tops within these forums but nothing has worked yet.

I'll list what the problem is and what I've tried.
So....

Roughly two days ago, the sun made an appearance and I thought it be nice to let the top down. The soft top went down and sadly thats where it stayed. The motor that controls the top, seems to be working ( there is enough fluid in the tank ) but there is simply no action. I released the two red bolts with the special tool that came with the car to try and manually raise the roof. That sort of worked.... Now more often than not the roof raises itself to about half way and stops. If I lower it and try raising it the chances of it doing anything are slim.

I also *tried* to reset the top by holding down the up switch that controls the windows for 10 seconds are after the windows were up. I'm not sure if that is the correct way or if there is even a way but I tried.

So at the moment I'm stuck. If you guys know of anything else I can try please let me know, I'm open to all suggestions

Thank you in advance.

Does the red button flash when you activiate it? You'll have to pull the codes to figure out what switch is not being made or has failed. Or you may get by with just clearing the codes.

I've done it before, but really don't remember how. Do a search. You'll find everything you need to know.

Thanks!

Soft Top Stuffed

Hey Waybomb,

thanks for the reply.

Okay... I have one of those cheap 38 pin scanners, ran that and the only error I got was for the ABS. Some modules came back OK, whilst others result read: Module not build in.
I tried doing an analogue scan with the three colored leads. Inserting the yellow into pin 21 and the others where they needed to go. Again same response. Module not build in. I cleared the only code I could (ABS) but still have the same problem.

Any idea's?

Thanks

P.S The red button doesn't flash, just stays lit.

I do not believe you can pull the soft top code with one of those cheap scanners.

Go to peachparts.com, and to the sl section. Do a search for my user id - waybomb. Somewhere in there, about three years ago, I had a problem with my soft top. Somebody posted very detailed instructions on how to pull codes off of a different plug, not the 38 pin, using a wire or two and watching the soft top button to flash out codes (you'll need two people - one to jumper, one to watch and record the codes, and how to reset after you fix whatever the issue is. It may simply need resetting, as mine did after the battery died.

Thanks!
