Question 1981 or 1984 380SE

Good evening,
I recently bought a 380SE and the information on the door jam says it was built in 7/1981 by Dalmier Benz. I have been looking on the internet for parts and everything I have found says that the 380SE was not available until 1984.
However from the instrument panel and other parts I have found that they do not match with my 1981 import. Does anyone know which vehicle I should be seeking when looking for parts?

VIN

Thank you for your reply
The Vin # is WDB126032 12 012961 X
This comes for the plaque named in German PRODUKTIONS-DATEN
I also have the original maintenance manual in German, however I do not have the English version of the owners manual, thus my problem with the the model date.
thanks

I am guessing 81, since your vin is way lower than mine on an 85se.

In 84 they started using the double row timing chains, instead of single row. Yours might have been replaced (if it hasn't it should to avoid catastrophic failure). If yours has single row it is pre 84. I have heard you can see this with a dental mirror through the oil fill. or pull the cover. I am not sure what else changed, but the engine code on the older ones might be different. if it says 81 on the door it probably is.

Your best bet is to take the VIN and the owner's manual to your Mercedes autoparts, or dealer, and go to the parts counter. With the excuse of any part you might wish to price have him chase down and tell you exactly what you need and how is your car identified to get the right parts. Then call the Mercedes 800 number and have them send you one manual in English.

A car would show appreciation for preventive maintenance by never leaving his owner stranded.

Defensive Driving is never having to say you're sorry: a true love story between man and machine.
