Really need inspiration here. My 1995 C220 windscreen wiper comes on intermitantly, even when switched off.

There is no auto sensor or anything like that. The arm also extends out, leaving the blade catching on the outer frame.

It is driving me mental and I am ready to rip it off.....help

Faulty multi-function switch and/or wiper relay would be my suspects.

You mean in the Park position, right?

That's not correct. It could be worn wiper linkages, or a mal-adjustment of the motor. Can you feel any slack/backlash if you lift the wiper arm?

Was it overloaded in winter with clearing snow?

It sounds like a combination of both suggestions. The worm gear can get damaged if not lubricated periodically or some other damage to the cam, which would cause the arm not to retract all the way when it parks. Just to be sure, you didn't replace the blade recently, possibly getting one that is too long? That would be a simple fix but I don;t think it;s your issue. Getting back to the problem, when your wiper is on do you notice it moving in and out as it wipes across the windshield? If it only sweeps but doesn't follow the cam movement in and out then you do have a more serious issue. This would describe the sticking problem. Coming on by itself would be symptomatic of the combination switch.
