1987 300E creaking noise.
Hi everybody, hope all is well!
I've been driving a 1987 300E for the past 3 or 4 years. It was a rebuilt salvaged vehicle from a well known trusted mechanic down in San Diego, CA. My father got it for me to commute to school.
During those 4 years, it was maintained as necessary, it got a transmission job done by the same mechanic who sold the car to us, gave it routine oil changes every 3K miles, replaced all four tires in the summer of 2008, and replaced the O2 sensor(it was needed).
I also got both rear brake pads and rotors replaced at MIDAS, where I later found out that the rotors were fine...
Anyways, about 8 months ago there was a creaking noise with every rotation of the wheels. I had it checked out by the mechanic in san diego, and he had no clue what was causing the noise, but didn't think it was a big deal.
Throughout the winter, the noise disappeared. It also should be noted that I usually do very light driving(I only commute to and from school, 5 miles each way). For all other errands, I take my girlfriend's car.
Fast forward to a few weeks ago, I had to take the car on the highway to go to a computer store(I usually just drive locally), apparently the trip on the highway going about 70mph along with traffic, brought the creaking noise back.
Now it seems to be creaking louder with every rotation of the wheels. It's most noticeable when I'm going at slower speeds around 5mph. Also, when I push on the gas from being in a stopped position, I hear a small grinding noise on the bottom of my car. It used to be much worse before I got my back brakes replaced, but it's still there, I'm not sure if it's somehow related to the creaking noise.
I know it's hard to diagnose the problem online, but do you guys think this is a big deal, or is normal with a 23 year old car? I'm a poor student and don't know much about cars so I don't really have the luxury of taking it to a different mechanic, not to mention how hard it is to find an honest mercedes mechanic around here.
Thanks for those who read the entire post, sorry if I was unclear.
