In Desperate Need for Advice - Buying a C36 AMG

Hello all,

This is my first post. I learned a lot navigating through some of the posts so thanks to those who have offered valuable info!

I have recently come across a 1995 silver C36 AMG. The car was imported from Japan. The mileage is 23,000 Km. YES, 23 Original Km according to the seller. The body is in good shape and the interior is better than new! I have few questions to ask:

1) I'm a little concerened about the low mileage given the car's age. Can a Mercedes dealership verify the mileage somehow?

2) How much would you pay for a car like this?

3) How expensive is maintinance? I hear the engine is bullet proof.

4) The gas peddale was heavey. Is this normal?

5) Not sure what else to ask, so please if there is any other info you wish to add please do so.

Thank you.

There is a section here devoted to the AMG models. I would look for it and ask your question there (W202 C36). This is the general forum and your questions are pretty specific. Good luck and welcome to BW.

Ask your insurance agent how expensive it is to insure an AMG.

I can only speak generally but W202's (the C36 is a variant) have what I believe are heavy pedal, in the sense that the accelerator has more resistance than any other car I've owned, so much that it sometimes tires my ankle on long drives around town with many stop-and-gos at traffic lights. The most important factor when buying an older car with low mileage is to check the records to verify that during that time it was driven regularly. Most collectors will steer clear of a car that has been garaged for substantial periods, or that were driven early then parked, you're just asking for problems that can be hard to diagnose (aside from the expected need to replace belts & hoses). Consider that gaskets leak after periods of disuse and I don't think you will want to invest in having an AMG engine torn down to replace engine seals, gaskets and the same is true for the transmission seals. Carfax may show registration with mileages or the service records will show oil change intervals, or if you have a relationship with your dealer a VMI (Vehicle Master Inquiry) will show all shop services performed with mileages.
