Red face Motor chain guides

I have a 1988 SL560 sport coupe. It has 18,600 miles (not bad for that age) In a recent visit to my mechanic he said that even though the mileage was low that because of the cars age I should replace the Plastic guides for the chain that times the motor. He said that if the guide broke off and fell in of the moving parts, it could a lot of damage that would be expensive to repair. While I have had a good history with him, this just doesn't make sense. Has anyone out there ever had a similar suggestion made to them? Elaine C.

If they are twenty years old and original, I'd replace them. I did that on my 560SL with 40,000 miles on it. You only need to replace the upper guides. While he's at it, ask him to replace the oiler tube plastic bits too. Parts for that are under ten bucks and labor should be minimal, since he'll be in the area anyway.
