What are you talking about? The only way to get a service history on your car is to get it from the previous owner (or if you're lucky the dealer), or from the indy shop that serviced it. That might require a bit of luck too.

The dealers have nationwide records of recalls, service campaigns, and other warranty replacements performed, but as noted that's it. They run a report called a VMI (vehicle master inquiry).

You are not ENTITLED to have a dealer give you this.

Should you take a potential purchase to a dealer and PAY for a PPI (pre-purchase inspection) it would be ok to ask for VMI information as part of that process.

Should you contemplate purchasing a car from a Mercedes dealer and that car was sold and maintained by that same dealer, you can possibly get some idea how religiously it was maintained. Otherwise--as noted--oil change history is not stored in any database.

Kent is correct. I bought a car from a 2nd dealer (car was traded in there) but went to the selling/servicing dealer and they gave me a printout of all service they performed there that included warranty, recalls, and customer paid. The only thing I don't have is what the 2 (yes it went through 2 CPO inspections) entailed from both dealers. The car has been quite reliable and I was lucky to have bought the car I did. Plus it came with a completed service booklet showing oil, brake fluid and coolant changes.

VMI will have all of the information mentioned above plus it will also contain all of the routine service work performed at a Mercedes dealer if the car was taken to a dealer for that service and the routine service was included as part of the original factory warranty. Mercedes stopped paying for routine service as part of the warranty with about the '04 or '05 model year. They started paying for it sometime in the 90's. As a side note, it is becoming a little more difficult to obtain a VMI on the car. I think MBUSA has directed the dealers to not provide them to customers anymore. Some dealers will still let you look at it and take notes though.
