about to buy a C230 1999

Hello Everyone. I am about to buy a C230, 1999, with 200 000 kilometers(125000 miles) I would like to know what to watch out for, which repairs I can expect soon, etc. Anyone here with a car like this one? Is the mileage too high for comfort?

Thanks!

Karle

You can find the specific forum for this car listed under Mercedes sedans using the drop down menu at the bottom of any page. Lots of varied advice there. For now I can offer my own experience and advice as I have the same car. Look for worn motor mounts and transmission mounts, check the flex disc as it wears out before this mileage generally, front suspension parts go bad around this point or earlier. Of course if these parts have been replaced before now it's ideal, but you need documentation to verify this, or an independent inspection which is always a good idea for a Mercedes. Just be sure it's done by a Mercedes specialist, preferably at an independent garage not the dealer. The transmission fluid should have been changed by now even tho it's stated as "lifetime" fluid, which is not accurate. Be sure all regular maintenance has been followed to avoid costly repairs. Some people experience issues with the duo-valves in the climate control system, the little flaps that switch air from side to side, etc., so check to be sure hot is hot and cold is cold when set at such, on each side and from top vents to floor vents, and also that center vents match temps on side vents. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the advice

Hi, Thanks for the advice. Excuse my ignorance here, but what is a flex disk?

I searched and here is a copy/paste:

Mercedes driveline designs since the mid sixties use rubber flex discs to connect the transmission to the driveline and the rear of the driveshaft to the rear axle. These flex discs absorb torsional vibrations from the engine/transmission and reduce shock load to the driveshaft and rear axle. The driveshaft is supported by a ball bearing, encased in a soft rubber cushion. This cushion also dampens unwanted driveshaft vibrations, and to some extent both the flex discs and the support cushion can be "tuned" to the specific arrangement of chassis, transmission and rear axle.

As mentioned above, the W202 during that period has the notorious "lifetime" transmission fluid. You should check to see if that has been serviced.

Unfortunately, there are many plastic trim pieces that seem to deteriorate. Many owners report problems with issues like the headliner coming loose, rattles and pieces cracking or breaking due to UV exposure.

If not replaced already, the trunk mounted battery probably should be.

Front suspension components, particularly the one piece tie rod assembly should have a look.

Also let us know where you are located, or update your "User CP" with the info. Some suggestions may be climate-specific such as for a dry or wet weather environment.

These cars, like all Mercedes, are sensitive to their maintenance schedule. The recommendation to change the battery is a good one, mine died with no warning of getting low. Same for my plugs, the mechanic told me I should change them soon and within 2-weeks they (or at least one) went bad and caused my car to run poorly until I got it back in that day. Some people experience the vibrations and squeaks of interior trim as also mentioned, this is easily remedied by padding with the thin strips of foam with sticky tape on one side you can get to weather seal doors and windows.

Thank you guys, I will complete my profile. I am from Montreal, Quebec. That particular car I was watching had some kind of transmission problem. The stick could not go below the "D" position (i.e. 4,3 or 2) and it made a strange rattling noise. So I will have to keep looking, I really like the 1999 W202 look.

That "look" is 1998 through to 2000, before the "bubble" styling came into fashion. You may want to include the C280 in your search, the V6 is very smooth.
