Question CPO Enough or get Independent Inspection Too?

For those with experience/knowledge about CPO inspections-
There have been issues posted on these boards and on the net about MB CPO cars that had undisclosed issues (mechanical problems, required service not performed, etc). Buyers found out after purchase that they didn't get what they paid for.

I'm looking at 2006-2007 CLK cabrios under 30k miles. Should I have an independent inspection done in addition to the CPO? Or, are the reports of CPO problems overblown? Thanks in advance.

I haven't seen the reports but I would assume that you should be able to return the car to the dealer to have the required work done at no charge. I've purchased two CPO vehicles from dealers and have no complaints. Given the potential cost savings associated with going this route, I would suggest that the reward certainly outweighs the risks. Still, an independent inspection is an inexpensive procedure that can provide the extra peace of mind that you're looking for.

In my experience, the CPO warranty is as good as gold. If the inspection is performed by the book it's plenty. But some dealers skimp on the inspection to save them money because they know MB, or the owner, will pay for the eventual repairs. If you have any doubts, have an independent inspection.

That comes quite often on this forum. I never bought CPO car, but have heard about members who bought them only to discover the car had body repairs and was repainted.
LEGALLY CPO would not allow it.
IMHO if I spend big thousands on the car, spending additional $100 on additional inspection to have quiet mind is excellent deal.

You didn't introduce yourself, so I don't know where you are. However, your option to have your CPO car privately inspected before purchase or pick up is the best alternate to evaluate the car and the dealer you're purchasing it from.

Nevertheless, you should have the inspection by a party knowledgeable and who can be trusted with his judgment.

A car would show appreciation for preventive maintenance by never leaving his owner stranded.

ALWAYS have any independent inspection done. CPO means nothing to some dealers. They will try to pass of junk as CPO. Have a mechanic and a body shop look at the car before you pay a cent.

I'll have an independent inspection done, as several of you confirmed my concerns. I agree that an ind. inspection will be a relatively small cost and finding a qualified/thorough inspector is key. I didn't list the car's location as I'm still searching and may travel far to pick it up.

Thanks for the good advice here.
