Stuttgart city is the main place, and has the museum and engine plant(s). There are regular tours, although you should check to see that your time is in English. Sindelfingen factory is a car assembly plant, with separate buildings for the different models eg S, E, C, etc. It is a satellite suburb and not easy to get to (time consuming by public transport). You should try and pre-book your (English) tour before you travel.
I spent an interesting afternoon tour of the UntertĂĽrkheim engine factory, tour guide guide was a retired German engineer, and just as I thought he was finishing his comprehensive explanation in each section, he would say "UND, der machin....." and continue for another long peroration.
