Timing chain install etc.etc.

Hi all,
I just purchased my first Mercedes, it's a 1995 e320. "CLEAN" The old owner ran it hot and blew the head gasket. I have been slowly removing all conections and bolts with the help of a book, but I somehow did something wrong when I worked on the chain area, I removed the chain tensioner and turned the crank. Would someone tell this dummy how to reenstall and retime the chain from scratch? Does the chain have to be cut to be removed or can I slip it off? I have experience on American cars and lots of tools. The book I have is by brookland books. Any book recommendations?

I have stopped working on the car untill I get some good first hand advice.
Thanks in advance
