'94 C220 Idle Problem?

I have a '94 C220. The past year or so, it idles really low (especially when the A/C is used!). Took it in, the mechanic said it was the typical bad wire harness- however, enough posts on here indicate that may not always be the issue, so I didn't want to shell out the $ on the unknown.

However, yesterday when I was at a stoplight, the RPMs surged and wouldn't let down. It was all I could do to mash on the brake and not hit the person in front of me. I shut the car off, and turned it back on. Immediately, it surged to at least 4000 rpm.

Does this car use an idle control valve, or idle computer-type unit? If I can find a used one locally, I wanted to try that first. I can't seem to find anything (parts, advice, etc) related to the idle on my car anywhere online!

Have you inspected the harness?? Only takes a minute to cut open some insulation to have a look.

How many miles on your C?

I've got about 140K on it.
I haven't cut open any of the harness- the general consensus here seemed to be that it was a nit-picky thing that could short out if the insulation were bad. A mechanic showed me a split in the insulation in one area. Incredibly small, but there was a tiny crack in it.

Have to disagree, if you have a 92-95 Merc that's behaving oddly the First thing you do is replace the harness.. They All go bad. You're lucky to have made it this far IME.

With wonky wiring you just end up chasing ghosts....frustrating and costly!

Definitely agree...thanks for the thoughts!

My mechanic recommended replacing the idle computer (or something like that) after replacing the harness, so a bad harness didn't short it out. Does that sound about right?

I wasn't sure about the idle control computer...there seem to be 2 ECM-type things, I'm guessing one of those is for idle control?
