Hi, I'm Mike (real name) I live in Pasadena, CA, and I am a SEL wannabe owner.
Actually, I started out wanting a 79-85 300D wagon. Most of them are pretty worn out now (but still running!) -or- been converted to veg (yuck). If I can find a really nice 'stock' one (the little old ladies here do
kick the bucket on occasion), I'll still consider it, but the price has to be right (and if it is then I have to find out what is really wrong with it).
Everyone knew M-B was selling a heckuva lot of S-class diesels back in the day (the 80's, esp. here in El Lay) but low and behold most seem to be still OTR. As I kept uncovering these in my search for a suitable 300D, my interest spread. I am even considering a 300SEL or 420SEL now.
Ideally, I hope to to find thee nicest SEL I can. My preference is for an SDL (e.g. this
has been up on CL for a few weeks), but an SD would do nicely.
My chief interest is fuel economy, safety, comfort (I'm an old man of 52) and low maintenance and running costs (thus the preference for diesel). I am infatuated with Benz build quality, and have an eye toward acquiring a vehicle that could last the rest of my life (or until fuel gets prohibitively expensive).
I could purchase a (used) contemporary Japanese car (a CR-V would be at the top of my list) but it just isn't the same.
Here in LA there is
a lot of choice. My next step is finding an independent who can perform the PPI.
