From what I remember it was Mercedes owning Chrysler, not the other way around.

Then at some point Daimler bought Chrysler (90's??), only to literally give it away for free (IIRC, they may have actually Paid to get rid of it) to Ceribus (sp), a private equity firm. Why Daimler ever bought Chrysler, (Or Ceribus ever took it) one can only speculate, but it sure didn't turn into a good investment for either company!!

Yes, Chrysler "bought" Mercedes, then drove itself into the ground, and divested itself for pennies on the dollar, just to see if it could be done. It is presently seeing if it can go bankrupt with Fiat's help.

The Mercedes-Benz brand and the automobiles sold under that brand are owned by Daimler AG (AG is a German term that is the same as "Inc." in the US, "Ltd." in Britain, and so on). Daimler AG is a publicly held company, so it is owned by its shareholders. Daimler AG merged with Chrysler Corporation to form DaimlerChrysler. That merger was dissolved and Chrysler was bought by the investment capital firm already mentioned and is now known as Chrysler LLC.

Chrysler Corporation never owned Daimler AG. There is no such company called Mercedes-Benz. Dieter Zetsche is Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars (a Division of Daimler AG).

Hope this clears it up for you.

Cheers.

Technically the STOCK holders own the company.

Just a nit....but actually the Mercedes name came from the Diamler side begining in 1901 as the DMG-Mercedes. With the merger of DMG and Benz the Mercedes-Benz brand was formed as part of the Diamler-Benz company. Later to become a full Division.

Technically, the stock of a company is divided into shares. The people who hold shares of the stock of the company are the shareholders. The company is owned by the shareholders.

"Technically" I would argue that shareholders do not have any "ownership" in the traditional sense. Even collectively they can't make any operating decisions of the corporation. No hire/fire/buy/sell/open/close decisions. Heck, they can't even determine the office dress code.

Share holders can't even nominate board members. They can only vote on board membership and certain key transactions.

In short they have "shareholder rights" not "ownership rights". Kind of like the good old USA itself. You need a lot of angry votes to influence even the smallest part of the company. All of the voters in the country don't own the USA any more then all of the shareholders of Ford own Ford.
