Son's Audi got totaled. Mercedes shopping?

Must be Easter time coming?
On his way to school this morning my young son stopped in traffic, while young driver with permit only hit the Jeep behind him, Jeep hit him and he nicked van in front.
All kids (from the same HS) are OK, but Audi Avant (SW) has imprint of Jeep deep in the cargo space and got both rear door jammed.
Being 2001 MY I see no way the car will not get totaled for about $8k value.
Since this was the last gas car in our household (ML320 belongs to the older that moved out) I am thinking of getting a diesel.
Anybody in USA or Canada knows about W210 diesel 4-Matic, favorable wagon let me know?
Dreams aside, anybody has a high mileage W210 diesel for sale? I don't mind "mechanic special" but like cars to have good paint.

Sorry to hear this but glad your son is ok.

Speaking of Jeeps....some model year Liberty's and Grand Cherokee's came with Mercedes designed common rail diesel engines (4 cylinders in the Liberty's and V6's in the Grands, same engine as the ML's).

The Jeep's are cheaper 4x4s than the Mercedes ML's but basically the same powertrain and safety goodies like traction control. Probably cheaper to insure as well. I also believe these Mercedes powered Jeep's also used 722.6 transmissions so maintenance items/procedures are very much what you are used to.

I'd give them a look, they are a rare find, but very good find none the less. I prefer the Grand's, they have a ton more torque and look better in my opinion.

The Liberty came with an Italian VM diesel, otherwise I agree with your points.

My mistake. Didn't DaimlerChrysler buy them out though?

Jeep is out of question. When I was buying Audi a year ago I picked up nice and clean car, hoping that he would take good care about it and drive it through the college.
The reality was that he doesn't care much. Never washed it unless I kicked him several weekends in the row, he drove with burned stop light for 2 weeks before I pushed him to work with me on it and so on.
Bottom line, this is what I am thinking.

It never ceases to amaze me that you can buy an almost 25 year old car that has an airbag and abs!!!
