Engine differences are
The 06 CDI is a straight 6 diesel
The 08 CDI is a V6 diesel
I have an 08 Bluetec and think the engine is powerful, smooth and silent. The Bluetec will tolerate only ULSD whereas the CDI can run on LSD. That issue however is gone since all fuel stations in the U.S.A. now serve ULSD for road fuel. The 08 also has an engine oil dipstick, an item that some earlier models do not have since we are too stupid to check or change our own oil I guess.
An advantage to the 08 is that it is a pre-urea engine. I believe the 09 Bluetec in the ML-series was a urea injection engine but in any case all new
E320 Bluetec use urea injection, another innovation that adds cost-of-ownership with no performance improvement and adds the potential of stranding if you run out in a location without urea access.
By the way, my 08 has a Bluetec badge on the trunk.
