good to buy?

I don't have a Benz yet and was looking at this 1986 E300D 155,000 miles for around $1000 pic's look good interior looks in good shape.

Any problems this year model to look out for? engine? transmission? etc

Thanks for your help

Full or part or no service history? How is the body and paint? The clear coat was poor in 1986, so be very careful because it could need a paint job ($$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$+++++). Is the odometer working? They were known to fail, thus the mileage is vastly understated. It could really have 550,000 miles, yet it shows 155,000. The A/C system could be costly to repair or retrofit if it doesn't work now, as it ran on R-12. Besides that, these were very good cars. If it checks out and really has 155,000 miles, then it sounds like a good price. You could get 100-300,000 more miles out of it. These ran forever.

1986 diesels have aluminum heads that are prone to cracks. Go to W123 subforum for more precise info.

But, there was no E300D in 1986.

Whatever it is, a Mercedes selling for only $1000 is equivalent to a Mercedes that might as well be in a junk yard. For the most part, a driveable Mercedes is $4K minimum and if you buy one for $1K you'll be spending at least $3K in no short order.

The problems in 1986 are common to all 1986 Mercedes--they're 24 years old. Transmissions fail, HVAC fails, on and on. It would be a near miracle to get service records for a $1K car, but if you do, look for recent replacements/repairs of big items.
