Hi, Everyone,

My name is James Combs.

After reading the board's threads for over a year now, I've decided to fully participate!

Formerly a french car (1982 Peugeot 604TD, 1978 Peugeot 504D) fanatic, I purchased my 1997 S320 SWB in August, 2008 with 53,800 miles on it. Smoke Silver, VIN: WDBGA32G9VA347382. Mileage today, 3-26-10, 81,300.

God, I always wanted a smoke silver, low-mileage 1997-99 W140! The car is very clean, everything works. The driver's side seat bottom and left side bolster shows wear from my time owning the car. The original alloy wheels all have that center "peel" action going on. Otherwise, the car is practically flawless. I get compliments everywhere I go. A distinctive, classic car!

I'll post pics shortly. A big thank you to the group and its major contributors (Brett, etc.). I've printed and 3-hole punched many DIY projects and other threads of interest. This is a knowledgeable group! I hope to contribute in some fashion or another.

I'd also like to gain the confidence to make many of my own repairs, just as I did with my old French Peugeots. I miss my french car-hobby.

Thanks for admitting me to the Group. I look forward to being a "real" participant, not just the "Guest"!

Most sincerely,

James A Combs, "Jim"

What took you such a long time to decide?

Hi, Josh,

Thoughtful question! My S320 is serviced by an independent MB shop in Salt Lake City. They're honest and their labor rate is slightly cheaper than the local MB dealer.

I've been curiously looking on as a guest, trying to learn about the car I bought 1 1/2 yrs ago! I just had the blower motor voltage regulator replaced 2 weeks ago. I KNEW I could have done that repair! So, with that in mind, I signed-on as a member. Next little repair comes up, I'm all over it...unless I chicken out again!

These MB hide their access areas well: vanity covers over the engine compartment, no visible screws to open up access to other areas, as well.

With time, some ethyl alcohol for courage, and another repair opportunity, I'll attempt my first MB-repair!

Seriously, Werner's Mercedes in SLC have been superb to work with on maintaining my car. No issues with them! I just miss repairing SOMETHING on my car!!!

Thanks for the welcome, Josh.

New S320 LWB Owner

James I just added a 1997 S320 to my Stable. This is my first post also. I added the S320 to keep from putting miles on my 1985 300SD. I have always been worried about working on my MB cars also. I currently own a 1987 190E for my Wife and my weekend car a restored 300SD and now the beautiful S320. I am stationed at Fort Benning right now and I got a CK ENG light (Misfire #6 Cylinder) I took it to the Auto Craft shop on base and they helped me change the coil and replace spark plugs. They really didn't help very much it was so easy I could not believe it. I did borrow a special Little spark plug threading tool that I consider a must for replacing plugs on a 6 hole engine. I also changed the ATF, Eng Oil, and Diff with Mobil one. I put Mobile one in all the MB I own they like that stuff. I read articles from the site to get the courage to work on my cars I am not a good mechanic. It was a very simple task to change the fluids and plugs and coil. Good luck

Thanks for the encouragement, Ricardo, and congrats on the 97 S320 LWB. Two things I wish my 97 was: the LWB and 4-Matic! Oh, well. Why "save" the 85 S-class diesel and not use your 97 320 more? Is the 1985 Diesel in even better condition? (Just restored; just answered my own question!) I had a 1990 190E, too. My black "Baby Benz" with Palomino interior. I LOVED that car. The gear shifts were a neck-braker, though! Got any pics of all the cars in your "Stable", Ricardo?

I respect and salute your service to our country, Ricardo. Please be safe.

All the best,
