Unhappy 190e slowly losing power

hi benz lovers, i have a problem and am wondering if anyone has a remedy. first the car would hickup and would run bad (40 mph tops) and after it sat a couple days it would run fine again for a week. then it started happening every couple days. now it will run fine for about 15 miles if you let it warm up first and after that it slowly loses power. so when im about 10 miles from work it starts to go slower and slower untill i can only put the throttle down halfway (actually the economy meter) or it cuts out. 1984 model. one afternoon while messing with it i noticed that if i unplugged the temprature sensor that it would run crummy so i gave it some throttle and noticed that it had some power. i tried to drive it with the temp sensor unplugged but it was either full throttle or nothing but at least it had some power, so i plugged it back in and what do you know it ran great for about 15 miles but then started the lose power bog down process once again so when it starts to get really bad i pull over, unplug the temp sensor wire, gun it a few times, plug the temp sensor back in and drive fine for 15 miles or so. its making me crazy. i hate to throw expensive parts at it not knowing what to replace but someone here im hoping has the know how to ask me the right questions to narrow it down somewhat. i am fairly mechanically able. thanks
