Question ML320 2000 Starting Problems

Our ML runs perfectly, fixed rough idle previous problem and power fine and runs consistently. Recently replaced plugs, leads, catalytic converter, oxygen air mass sensor, fuel filter etc etc. to cure.

Problem is that most of the time engine cranks for long time before starting. Always starts and then runs fine. Key only turned once but could be quite a few or more seconds to fire which is abnormal for this car. Dealer reckons possibly contaminated fuel which requires great expense of probable fuel pump "investigation" and draining of fuel tank. Seems strange that car runs so well. Tried turning on ignition well before cranking but this does not seem to help.

Problem has been ongoing since rough "idle issues" were sorted, several fuel refills away and maybe over 1000km. Mainly short city stop/start trips though.

Please help as cure seems strange as otherwise runs so well and consistent when started is offline

Start with the basics. Is your battery reasonably new (3-4 years or less) or it is older than that?

If it is I would definitely install a new battery.

The other possibility is the CPS, crankshaft position sensor.

Another thing: lots of short trips are hell on engines...they don't get hot enough to evaporate water in the crankcase causing the oil to goo up and create acids that start to eat away at your block...

Make sure your engine reaches "normal" operating temperatures and stays there for at least a few minutes.

Thanks for that. The battery is a few months old - perfect. The crank sensor was replaced less than 2 years ago.
Any feel if it could be "contaminated petrol"? is offline

It's pretty unlikely that you bought several tanks of bad fuel in a row.

If the gas were the culprit it would run wrong. It has to be a sensor or the starting circuit (including correct engagement of the tranny in "P"). Run the scanner and find out what code it throws.

This is assuming that all maintenance items are OK.

A car would show appreciation for preventive maintenance by never leaving his owner stranded.
