Cat rattle

New member here,
Got the dreaded cat rattle on my 99 E320. Obviously coming from inside the drivers side rear (main?) cat.
However, after running the engine for only about 2 minutes, the PASSENGER side FRONT cat unit got really blazing hot...none of the other 3 even got warm to the touch. Does this make any sense? Could it indicate a problem with that side as well?
Also, I'm back and forth between repalcing the entire assembly (pipe & 2 cats) on the affected side, or trying to go cheap and buy just the ratlling rear cat and have a muffler shop splice & weld it in for me. I have 125k miles and have never had O2 sensors replaced; should I go ahead and replace them or get a diagnostic first to see if I get fault codes before doing anything?
Thanks for any help,

You have a W210 and we have a dedicated forum. Scroll down from here and look in the sedans section. Then check the stickys at the top and you can read about other's experience with failing cats. Please use the User CP link at the top and add your location and model as this is often useful. Good luck and welcome to the forum.
