moving on from W140- ?recommendations?

My 1993 500SEL is showroom new, 109K miles, but it sits in the garage most of the time. The trade in value is painfully low for the quality of this car, but I am thinking of moving on, maybe to an E class early 2000s, or maybe a Volvo XC cross country wagon,or 5 series BMW, or early 2000s Lexus (never thought I would say the "jelly bean" word).

My goals are relatively low maintenance costs, as I am now 60 and don't want a lot of repair surprises. Safety. Excellent seating comfort. Mid size.
Timeless looks but not too flashy. (My W140 is so nice that when I drive it, too many people do a double take- I want to be more low profile now)

What about an E class 4 matic wagon, early 2000s?

any thoughts about an Audi A-6?

Hope this generates some lively debate!!!

Based on what you said, an 00-02 E320 may be a good bet. The wagon was good from 01-03. The XC70 was a good solid car and fairly reliable, but very boring to drive and lacks some of the luxury features that should be found on that price level of a car. The 5 series was alright, but not great. A lot of the sensors will fail over time and interior doesn't hold up well. The ES or GS were both very well built and super reliable. The GS430 was fun to drive with the V8, but the rear seat is tight. I would avoid the A6 from this time period. It had a lot of mechanical and electrical problems, and the overall build quality wasn't great. Its also boring to drive, the seats are by far the worst and most uncomfortable of the group.
I'm not sure where you live, but that could help make a decision.

Another vote for a late W210--an '01-'02 sedan or '01-'03 wagon. You'll pay a little more for a 4Matic, but it's worth it. They made a lot of W210s, so finding a low-mileage example is still possible, though you may have to travel to get it. My experience with the other cars on your list corroborates mr.xpowerseller's comments.

I own a 2001 E-Class sedan and it has had it's share of issues but all minor. Look in the W210 forum where we have a list of commonly encountered problem areas.
