"best" mercedes ever made
Obviously a controversial topic. I own a 1979 240D as a daily driver. Probably one of the simplest, most reliable models, but not much power. Also own a 1993 500SEL-probably the peak of MB engineering when cost was no object. But it has a lot of complicated systems, such as the suspension, but is an incredible car. However, I rarely drive it. It is so imposing, and a bit large for city driving.
I think the W123 and W126 body styles, 1980-90,probably as good as you can get.
If you want a sports car, while my style preference is for the old 450SL, in terms of safety and improvements, the SL series in the 1990s (with built in flip up roll bar) would be one to look at- pay more for top condition. Look in the Mercedes Benz Club of North America magazine (the Star) for members cars for sale-they usually are compulsive on records.
You live in Orange County, where there is a great selection of locally owned MBs.
So, my favorites: 1980-85 dark blue 450 SL
SLs from the 1990s
MB 300SD, 1985 era
MB 420 SEL, late 80's
most diesel MBs
Dream Coupe: a 450 SLC, dark blue or white, in new condition
or: a W140 body style coupe 1990s era.
