Cool 1995 SL500 General Maintenance

Just bought it about a month ago and I am going to change the oil and intake air filters. 75k miles. I tried to scoot under it but to close to the ground, tried to get the ramps under but to close to the ground. Maybe my floor jack might be the answer. Where should I put it? any recommendations on other filters I should change or other maintenance that I should look at doing? I called the MB dealer $210 for a front end alignment. I will go for tires soon, maybe Pirrelli Zero's or Michelin Pilots again. Any recommendations? Thanks

You should change all the fluids and filters if you have no idea when they were last done. A front end alignment does not cost $210. It should be under $75 for a 4 wheel job.

Mr. X is right about the cost of alignment. A good alignment shop will do a 4-wheel alignment (you need that with independent suspension) for less than $100. He's also right about changing all the fluids and filters right now if you don't have records when they were last changed. Don't forget the cabin filter.

Your car is a R129 chassis. There is a forum further down this site specifically for that chassis. It is under the Roadster forums. There is a whole group of people who own the same chassis as you and most of them are 500s. Your car is the M119 engine which some think is "the best" but others (like me who have the M113 engine) disagree. It's a good group. They can answer all the questions you have about owning and maintaining the new love of your life.

You didn't say if you have staggered wheels or not. I have them, and I have Sumitomo HRGIII tires on mine. They are relatively inexpensive and last 15k miles or so--more than many. The Pirellis get lousy reviews for both wear and noise, plus they are $300 or so a corner.

Good luck, and welcome! You will love your R129; it's a great, nearly unbreakable car.

I wouldn't use a floor jack. The lift points for the tire-change jack can be used with that jack and then you can put jack stands under the lift points. You can change the oil from the top with an exchanger--ask the guys in the R129 forum.

I may be wrong about the floor jack--they will also know that.

All Mercedes since the 1970s have been designed to have the motor oil changed by vacuuming it out the dipstick tube. This is MUCH easier and safer than trying to drain the oil via the pan plug.

Get a tool for this--I like MityVac, but there are others.

In any event, any time there's a washer on a drain plug on a German vehicle, it's replaced and never reused.

Cannot imagine why you think you need an alignment. Has the car been in an accident? Are steering components worn and causing vibrations? There is NO SUCH THING as an "alignment" that doesn't involve replacement of worn or damaged parts. Otherwise, it's an alignment "check."

Welcome Keito,

I can't comment on the prices, since I'm from out of the country , however DrJfrmLA is correct about you checking out the R129 forum, as we'd be more that happy to help you out. I need to inform you thou, that there first thing they would tell you is to complete profile

See you there!
