My 1979 450sl is fun and needs attention
My 79 450sl and I have just joined the forum. Originally I bought the car for my daughter because I like the idea of her driving something that was sporty and would keep her safe if she happened to bounce off another car.
Turns out she likes driving our minivan (aw shucks) so I'm driving the 450.
Like most, my 450 has the usual vacuum issues and a non-functional climate control system. It has a nice straight rust-free body, nice hardtop and soft-top. There is some rust in the spare-tire well and driver's side floor pan. I've ordered seals for the trunk and driver-side door and window.
My first act of MB-treason was to pull the broken/leaking/inoperative water control valve and replace it with a manual valve so i could heat the cabin in the cold weather. I've left all the wiring and connections in place to restore it at some point in the future. I felt bad about this right up to the moment all that hot air came out and defrosted my frozen windshield!
I'm hoping someone out there has a good vacuum diagram for the 79 so I can chase the lines through the car. I have a couple manuals but they don't show it in clear enough detail (old eyes I guess). When investigating the climate control issues I pulled the glovebox and saw that some thoughtful soul had removed the cabin temperature sensor leaving a carbonized hunk of the foam rubber sleave and an empty connector. I guess it does take the guesswork out of testing the part....one less thing!
Be talking to you all, gotta go do something constructive,
