Please make a case for the absolute best used MB for 30K.. argue me out of a diesel
I can swing about 35K max, but would like to keep it closer to 30k. I used to own a 126 diesel, and read all sorts of great stories about the new bluetec. I've test driven a couple, and while I've been impressed, I haven't been knocked off my socks. Their performance was impressive on the old "ass in the pants" test at lower RPMs (duh.. it's a diesel) , however I noticed that when I was maxing out at around 4700RPM, it seemed rather anemic. I currently drive a much slower 420 SEL which seems ready to rip the world apart right before a shift (and frequently slips the wheels when going from 1st to 2nd under hard acceleration). The diesel gas mileage is such a great improvement from my 420 that I figured I couldn't go wrong.
Unfortunately... MB decided to keep the USA diesels woefully under equipped compared to their gas counterparts. I haven't driven an e350, but it has better stats on everything but TQ. It comes standard with a sport package (100% unavailable on the diesels) and they frequently have xenons, which are great.
Basically, my question(s) are:
1)Is it stupid to consider buying the diesel because I like the TQ and mpg vs the v6 model? I'd probably be spending 5K plus more on a diesel model.. is that diesel engine worth that much more? I've even started to find E550s for cheaper than the bluetecs....
2) If diesel isn't my only good option... please plea your case for me to buy another model for up to 30-35k. The C class is likely out of this discussion because of my size.
I've told myself I cannot justify spending 30-35k on a new/used car unless it meets and significantly beats most of the features I have on my 20 year old 420SEL. As far as the scorecard goes...
Leather: 420 wins, at around 155k, the leather is freaking flawless. The diesel comes with tex (which seems to prove more durable in the long run than new mb leather, and my old 300SD with 240K has seats that look brand new). Winner: not a big deal.. don't really care, would prefer leather, but it simply doesn't age as well as the fake stuff. Plus.. who can tell the difference?
Comfort: 420 is more spacious, bluetec has more creature comforts such as steering wheel controls
engine: 420 slips from 1-2, but the overall performance is much lower than the bluetec
mpg: bluetec wins, hands down
build quality: will i be driving the bluetec in 15 years like I intend? don't know, but I know the 420 is still one of the best cars on the road.
Overall: gas prices will only go higher, that's why I want a diesel because I assume in 15 years when I'm still driving this car, gas may be around 15/gallon. I know gas price is a stupid reason to buy a car (especially at such a premium), however I would hate to buy an e350 for options, dog it at every light and achieve 17mpg that requires premium fuel. I dog my cars.. and I figured even if I dogged the diesel, I'd still be getting around 25mpg...
So please... someone.. tell me how to spend 35K!
