An R107 doesn't have a chance at "sporty" or "edgy," particularly with US spec bumpers hanging off the front and back like derricks. They are great classic Mercedes vehicles, but they are heavy, slow, and definitely not sporting unless you get a Euro-spec 380 with a manual transmission. If you start tarting one up, they look woeful and embarassed and the driver looks foolish.
The other guys are exactly right--restore what needs to be restored, make it a garage queen for weekend use, and enjoy the looks of passersby. If you want a hot rod Mercedes roadster, get an R129 chassis in some flavor and monkey around with it. Better yet since you're a young guy, get an R170 or R171 SLK and do it up to your heart's content. Leave the old R107 girl be.
