A neighbor recently backed into my nearly perfect 1991 Toyota Camry (120,000 miles). The formula his insurance company uses is 80% of the market value of the car equals a total loss. What I don't know is what source they use to appraise the car. I got a couple of estimates in the $1200 range. I checked around and the car's values were all over the map but the highest was $3500. So if they used that I was well within the safe zone. But if they used a much lower one, they could take my car and I was afraid that would happen. I was warned about the pitfalls of going through that (e.g. trying to buy it back with a salvage title and all of that) because I wanted to keep the car and have it fixed. At least in my state, as the previous owner, we don't have first refusal rights so I could not be sure I'd even get the car back. I was told I'd be bidding against any Tom Dick or Harry who might want my car.

Bottom line: I accepted their lowball offer of $750 to bang the door out and putty it, then paid $400 more to have the job done to my satisfaction.
