My Beloved 126 Declared Totaled: Advice?

My 1989 300SE, 153,000 miles, a beautiful car maintained meticulously, was rear-ended by an idiot in a Range Rover while I was stopped in a freeway backup. The impact --probably 30-35 mph -- buckled the left rear quarter and trunk lid, and loosened the bumper and exhaust. State Farm today offered me $2100 for a salvage title or $2400 to scrap the car. Their estimator figured the repair cost at $6200. I want to keep her and fix the damage. Has anyone run across a similar situation? Have I any recourse? This is just making me sick.

Take the salvage title, buy another W126, and you'll never have to buy spare parts again, because you'll have a parts car.

Insurance company is right. Its not worth fixing, especially if there is frame damage. Buy it as a parts car or let it go.

What frame would that be? Can't say I'm aware of any body-on-frame 126s.

Uniframe. It is build-in to the body, but technically it is still the frame.
I see car with much bigger damage to the rear parked in certain neighborhood for last 5 years. Somebody is still using it.
Keeping the car as a donor doesn't make much sense unless you have empty barn on your lot. I kept crushed Volkswagen years ago. In over a year I used 1 part worth about $150. Than I junked the car and started collecting $600 a year for the garage lease.
But parting the car out can be nice hobby and will make you feeling good for helping fellow forum members.
