Picking a diesel sedan...CDI, Bluetec

I'm in the market for a diesel benz since our E420 was totaled this week We have to pick something out pretty quick since we'll have to give the rental back. So, here is what I would like to know:

CDI seems (from most reading on here) to get slightly better MPG. Bluetec slightly less. Generally true or no?

Do all bluetec's require urea? If no, what years do require it (I want no urea)

What year is CDI vs Bluetec?

3.0L vs 3.2L?

Is there a year to stay away from or that has more problems than others?

They are all turbocharged, right?

What is the expected lifetime mileage of these cars? Typical 500000 miles like most passenger diesels or more/less?

I'm happy to hear any information available.

Thanks!

Greg

Also, I'm in Houston, TX willing to drive 1000 miles in any direction to pick up a car if you know of a good one for sale. No white cars and no black interior.

2005, 2006 cdi and Bluetec after. No urea on them to my knowledge.
life expectancy? How about a million miles? Welcome to the forum and please go to W211 section where you can read a lot about those models. Also check my "cluster readouts" in this section.

It's only a minor point, but if there is any year to "stay away from" it would be the 2005, as that car will have had more time running pre-ULSD diesel fuel, meaning liklihood of EGR clogging is greater.

Inline 6 in '05 and '06, a 1999 design. Iron block, aluminum head.

V6 started everywhere in 2007, and is a much more modern design. All aluminum.

Both are indeed turbocharged, electronically controlled, variable vanes.

The V6 have diesel particulate filter and older versions don't (and stink).

The V6 is indeed only 3.0 l despite the E320 (and for 2010) E350 designations. They do, however, put out more hp and torque than the inline 6.

Urea only in ML, GL, and R-class, never in E-class through 2009.

The later cars are more likely to have phone, SAT radio equipment than the earlier ones.

Grand, so 05-08 are where its at.

I'm not as concerned with the ULSD vs LSD as I can get both near where I live. Thanks for the information from both posters

I am concerned with finding one quick!

quick find of rare Mercedes is not good way to do it.
Finding the right options is not that easy. Lot of those cars are advertised as having GPS, when the unit was never installed.
I would pay premium for folding rear seats. Hard to find.
Than lot of lease returns are beaten up. Good luck.

While I agree, sometimes there is no alternative. Someone destroying your paid off car when you only have one vehicle to drive leaves one in that situation.

Garage
2008 Bluetec

Have one bought new. Solid, dependable, fast, quiet. Great car (but I still wish it was a W123).

I'd go for post face lift. I agree that 'finding one as soon as possible' is not a good buying strategy. You will end up with a base model with zero options, high mileage and a beat up paint job. You want low mileage, full service history, lots of options, and in good condition. It will take some time to find and you may have to expand your search area.

No, I won't end up with that because I won't buy it. I am expanding search area to about a 1200 mile radius.

Why do you suggest post facelift? It seems the V6 version has worse MPG..which is one of the main reasons for getting the diesel in the first place.

It's almost always better to get a post face lift car when it comes to Mercedes. By that point, Mercedes has normally revised and fixed many of the issues that were present on the original design. While it may get ever so slightly less MPG, its an overall better car that will be worth more when you go to sell it in the future.
