Door Lock (Latch) Malfunction W126

Hi all,
I have a 1986 420 SEL that I bought a week ago. Up until now, there hasn't been anything wrong with the door lock (latch). Now, all of a sudden out of no where, the door latch gets stuck in the "lock" position everytime I get in/out of the car! For example: I unlock the driver-side door with my key (no remote key); I open the door, sit down, and and try to close the door, but the latch is in a locked state that won't allow the door to close There is no budging of the latch no matter how hard I slam the door... just loud noise and rejection of the door to close. The only way that I am able to close the door is by manually resetting the latch out of a "locked state" by by pulling the door handle (the part you pull to exit the car or the outside handle) and manipulate the latch so that it "opens" and latches to the door fram correctly.

I know this is kind of long worded... just want to give the best description possible. Any help on how to fix this will be appreciated. Also interested to know if there is any background on why this happened.

I have no special knowledge about your door lock that can help you here, but I would not be surprised if the previous owner suffered with this problem also. Of course your banging/forcing isn't going to help a great deal!

No doubt you have tried dosing it with WD40 in case the mechanism is getting stuck. If all else fails, you may have to renew the entire lock...
