Diagnostic help! 1994 C220

Hey there,

Need some expertice please. I have resusitated a 1994 C220 (Canadian version), can starts and idles fine, even runs well for say 10mins, but once warm the engine bogs down, it's difficult to accelerate, and causes hard auto tranny shifts. I need some help determining what the issue could be.

I'm thinking the coils, wires or plugs, bad cat converter...any or all of these? Please help.

Thanks, Rampton

RE:Diagnostic help! 1994 C220

Mass Air Flow sensor. Try cleaning it first, they make aerosol spray just for MAF sensors. Don't use regular carb cleaner or brake cleaner. This may help, if not you need a new sensor. Remember this is just a stab in the dark, to know for sure you need to get a scan tool, like SDS on it to see what the fuel adaptation is at. But the MAF is a common failure item and will cause the symptom you describe. If you can get someone to put a diagnostic tool on the car and you can look at the mixture adaptation, it should be right at 1.00 or close to it....if it is less than 1.00 then the car is running rich, if it is more, then it is lean. The MAF will make it run lean, especially in the partial load range, because it is telling the computer that there is less air coming in than there actually is, so the computer cuts back on the fuel injection quantity. Good luck.

You own a first gen W202 chassis. There is a forum on this site for that chassis. It might help if you ask your question on that forum because there is a room full of people who own the same (or some variant) car you do. The likelihood of them having a more experienced diagnosis is higher than this general forum.

Good luck.
